Abstract

An automatic press for clamping a fastening plate into the beams of a timber joint comprises a bottom platen 19 which is vertically movable and a pivotable upper platen 22. The upper platen is pivotable from a first position in which it is located above and generally in parallel with the lower platen into a second position in which it is inclined upwardly from the lower platen. A locking mechanism 25 locks the upper platen in the first position to provide a reaction force for the lower platen. <IMAGE>
