Abstract

In a motor vehicle hydraulic brake system having an inertia-responsive valve assembly 100 provided to interrupt the flow of hydraulic fluid from a master cylinder 11 to brakes 14 via an outlet port of the valve assembly when vehicle deceleration exceeds a given threshold, a pressure- responsive piston 28 in the valve assembly is effective to override the inertia-responsive valve element 26, and maintain fluid communication from the master cylinder to the outlet port when the outlet port pressure exceeds a given value. The outlet port pressure may be applied as hydraulic braking pressure to selected wheel slave cylinders, or as pilot pressure to a pressure modulator such as a proportioning valve. The provision of such an inertia-responsive valve assembly in a hydraulic brake system enables a brake characteristic to be provided which closely follows the ideal brake curve to prevent wheel lock. <IMAGE>
