Abstract

A vegetable grader is described which may be used for any articles to grade them according to size but is particularly adapted to the grading of carrots and like root crop vegetables. Size discrimination is achieved by using on inclined bed of diverging rollers (10) the in relative spacing between adjoining rollers being adjustable to obtain the desired grading characteristic between one end of the bed and the other. All the rollers are rotated in the same direction so as to avoid nips being formed. A lazy tongs mechanism (22) adjusts the spacing of bearing mountings (14) pivotally attached to the pivots of the lazy tongs mechanism. Two lazy tongs are provided above and below the array of bearing mountings (14) and a synchronous drive (84) ensures the same movement by each mechanism. Conveyors (90-98) take away graded vegetables. A delivery conveyor incorporates a plurality of counter-rotating pairs of rollers (102, 104) transverse to the direction of conveying, the array being inclined to the horizontal. <IMAGE>
