Abstract

Having a target comprising radiation emitters defining four points ABCD in non-coplanar relationship, a first set of three ABC lying in a first target plane while a second set of three BCD lies in a second target plane eg substantially normal to the first target plane. A camera 7 has a focal plane 40 and views said target, a two-dimensional array of photo sensitive elements being at the focal plane to receive radiation from the radiation emitters. A computer scans said array to generate signals indicative of the position of images A'B'C'D' of the points ABCD on the array, whereby the orientation of the target, and hence of an object to which it is attached, may be determined in relation to a selected reference plane. The position of the target and/or object may be displayed eg on a C.R.T. The apparatus may be used, in detecting the position of the cutting head of a tunnelling machine. <IMAGE>
