Abstract
In a liquid metal cooled nuclear reactor installation the long-lived fission products issuing from damaged fuel rods within the fission zone (3), which products are more volatile than the coolant itself, are concentrated in aerosols which the coolant forms in the covering inert gas blanket (7). The entrained liquid metal and fission products are precipitated in at least one vapour trap (10) through which the inert gas is passed. In a distillation device (14) at least one fission product, more particularly caesium, is distilled out of the liquid metal precipitated in the vapour trap(s) (10) before the liquid metal is conducted back into the coolant circuit. Calculated over a long period, a considerable reduction is thus achieved in the radioactivity due to deposition of fission products in the installation. <IMAGE>
