Abstract
An instrument for navigating land vehicles on uneven terrain includes attitude sensors (18, 20) which respond to deviation of the yaw axis (z<F>) of the vehicle from the vertical (z<R>). A computer computes the attitude angle or the sine or cosine thereof from the attitude sensor signals. Signals from a movement pick-up indicative of movement relative to the ground are combined with signals from a heading reference unit. The computer then transforms the heading angle (< alpha >K) measured in a heading reference-fixed coordinate system to a heading angle (< phi >K) relative to an earth-fixed coordinate system (x<R>, y<R>, z<R>) using the attitude angles (and/or their sines or cosines) and generates a signal for compensating for the drift induced in the heading reference-fixed coordinate system, an axis of which represents a heading reference direction determined by a directional gyroscope. The attitude sensors may be accelerometers (18, 20) or clinometers. <IMAGE>
