Abstract

In a process for the separation of a mixture of gases in one or more diffusion stages (D1, D2....Dn), each stage is fed at an optimum flow rate by means of regulators (E, G1, G2.... Gn), taking into account the concentration of the lightest gas in the charge (a) and the diffusion rate of this gas, so that the total amount of the lightest gas passes into the diffused phase. The undiffused phase (c) at each stage is extracted without recycling to an upstream stage. The regulators (G1, G2...Gn) incorporate analysers to detect the presence of any of the lightest gas in the undiffused phase (c). There may be recycle of diffused phase in one or more stages and a stage may comprise a plurality of diffusers arranged in parallel. <IMAGE>
