Abstract

A mullite is synthesised by reacting in the presence of water stochiometric quantities of a lower alkyl silicate and a water soluble aluminium compound capable of being hydrolysed to a polymerisable substances e.g. aluminium chlorohydrate or aluminium alkoxide. The reaction product contains silicon oxygen and aluminium and on firing gives a residue containing the mullite. The most useful industrial application of the invention is to cause or allow the reaction system to gel into a rigid and coherent mass into which refractory grains can be incorporated.
