Abstract

Cells; electrodes; oxygen and hydrogen, obtaining.-In a cell for the generation of oxygen and hydrogen, each electrode comprises a column of sheet iron strips 5, Fig. 2, bent into rectangular frames with sloping sides. Each column is surmounted by a hood 6 projecting above the liquid. The strips 5 are connected together by vertical strips supported by rods passing through insulating glands in the roof. Gaps 17 are provided in the bottom members of the columns. The cell is divided by partitions 12 into anode and cathode compartments frorn which the gas is withdrawn by pipes 14 connected to headers. A circulation of electrolyte up through the electrodes and down between them is set up, promoting separation of the gases without the use of a diaphragm. In a modification, the cathode consists of a cylindrical sheet. 22, Fig. 3, provided with sloping gaps and an unperforated sheet 21 connected to it at the bottom by an annular plate 23. The anode is mounted within the cathode and consists of an outer cylinder with sloping gaps and an inner unperforated sheet. The space between the electrodes is closed at the top by a plane or V-shaped annular disc 27 secured to the partition 24.
