Abstract

Polymeric binders suitable for use in chewing gum are disclosed, the binders comprising an oligomer of vinylacetate and a plastifying agent, viz. water. The binders are prepared by the oligomerization of vinylacetate in an aqueous medium in the presence of a molecular-weight regulator, viz. acetaldehyde, an oil-, water-soluble initiating system consisting of benzoyl peroxide, and ammonium persulphate or potassium persulphate at a temperature of from 50 to 55 DEG C. The unreacted vinylacetate and acetaldehyde is then distilled off from the desired product and washed with heated water or treated with live steam. Chewing gum can be produced including the said polymeric binder in an amount of between 35 and 42 per cent by weight.
