Abstract

Movable members 9 to 11 carrying knives 6 to 8 are positioned at selected positions on a support by a bar 16 to which the members are coupled by a pin 29, carried on each member, and which engages in one of a number of holes 21 equi-spaced along the bar. The bar is reciprocated, by motor 36, so that the members may be moved, in either direction, by successive increments equal to the hole pitch. The members are moved in this manner until they each reach the nearest and most expedient hole to the new position. The bar is then moved one more pitch and as each member is determined to be at its new position its pin is withdrawn from the hole and it is clamped to the support. Mounted on the bar opposite each hole is a switch 22 arranged for operation by the pin and connected to a central micro-processor which continuously monitors and controls movement of the knife supports. <IMAGE>
