Abstract

For sensing depolarising species in gases, especially for sensing carbon monoxide in air, for example in coal mines, an electrochemical cell has two electrodes of identical composition in the presence of an electrolyte, one of the electrodes being positioned so that an atmosphere to be sensed can diffuse to it. No voltage is applied across the electrodes, other than that resulting from the depolarising action of gas species in the atmosphere and the sensor current is measured. The sensor offers the possibility of manufacturing an easily portable instrument which is not subject to zero drift.
