Abstract
Phosgene or phosgene-containing gas are produced as waste gases in industry and have to be treated before being emitted. Treatments to remove or decompose the phosgene have been to wash with alkalis or to pass the waste gas over active carbon sprayed with water. The former provides a further effluent to be worked up and the latter process is easily inactivated by other substances present in the waste gas. The present invention provides a process for the decomposition of phosgene by hydrolysis wherein the phosgene is dispersed in water or water containing an acidic gas.
