Abstract

A torsion meter includes a digital display device having a rotatable digit defining mask 17 mounted on a shaft 20, and controlling light of an incident light beam to a fixed group of optical fibres 12 coupled to a display 10, to illuminate the elements of the display. The light beam is incident upon this mask from datum defining means also mounted on the shaft at a predetermined distance from the digit defining mask 17 and possibly including a light beam defining mask 21. Different digit representations are displayed, indicating changes in torsion in the shaft, as relative rotational displacement between the two masks varies, and when a datum position for the shaft is determined by the datum defining means. Possibly (Fig. 2 not shown), the datum position rotates with the light beam defining mask to provide a continuous display, appropriately arranged further groups of optical fibres being provided between the digit defining mask and the display for this purpose. <IMAGE>
