Abstract

The apparatus includes a sensor 3 in or adjacent the combustion space 2 which monitors the combustion reaction and provides a signal when high- frequency pressure or temperature fluctuations, which are indicative of pinking, occur. The signals are differentiated twice and if the value of the second differentiation exceeds a predetermined value, a control signal is generated to retard the ignition by means of the ignition timing control 7. <IMAGE>
