Abstract
The process for producing styrene or an alkylderivative thereof comprises alkylation of toluene or alkylderivatives of the latter with ethylene into methyl group, followed by conversion of the alkylation products in the presence of a heterogeneous catalyst consisting of zirconia promoted with oxides of alkali metals, alkali-earth metals or a mixture of both and separation, from the conversion products, of the desired product and aromatic hydrocarbons, viz. ethylbenzene, propenylbenzene or alkylderivatives thereof which are then recycled back into the conversion stage. The process makes it possible to increase the desired product yield up to 80% by weight.
