Abstract
198,541. Hugh, P. G., and Scammell & Nephew, Ltd., G. May 9, 1922. Compound or articulated road vehicles.-In sixwheeled vehicles in which the front end of a twowheeled trailer is mounted on a turntable connected by a transverse. axis to the rear end of the tractor, tilting movements of the turntable about the transverse axis are limited by ties and/or stops arranged between the front and rear of the turntable and the frame of the tractor, or between the axle and the tractor. Springs or dashpots may be employed to resist tilting before the limits are reached. The apparatus is intended mainly to prevent overturning or undue tilting of the trailer body or load due to sudden acceleration or deceleration when the tractor and trailer make a substantial angle with one another. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the turntable 1 which supports the trailer is connected by springs 2 to trunnion blocks 3 mounted upon the rear axle 4 of the tractor. The frame 5 of the tractor is independently mounted upon the axle, 4 by springs 6. Ties consisting of flexible wire rope loops 7, 8 are arranged between pins 9, 13 on the front and rear of the turntable and rollers 11, 14 on the shackle bolts for the tractor spring 6. Similar ties 16, arranged between pins 17 on the tractor frame and the axle 4 co-operate with whichever of the ties 7, 8 is in operation, to prevent lifting of the frame 5. In a modification, an equivalent limiting effect is obtained by stops operating between the turntable and the tractor frame in conjunction with stops between the tractor frame and axle. In a further modification, adjustable ties and adjustable stops are provided. In the construction shown in Fig. 4, in which springs are employed, flexible members 25, 26 are connected at one end to brackets on the turntable and are led over pulleys 11, 14 on the tractor frame 5 to the axle 4, being connected thereto bv means of springs 29. Stops such as short flexible connections passing through the springs may be provided to prevent extension of the springs beyond a limited amount. Stops 19, 20 may also be provided. In the modification shown in Fig. 5, tilting is resisted and limited by stops 30 and ties 31 anchored to the front and rear of the turntable and carrying pistons which work in cylinders 33 pivoted to the tractor spring brackets. Tilting is resisted by a dashpot action and by coiled springs before the limiting position is reached. In a further construction, the two ends of a flexible tie are connected to the tractor frame and pass over a pulley on the turntable. One of these ties is arranged at the front and another at the rear of the turntable.
