Washing - machines with axially - moving plungers and dollies.-In vacuum washing- machines of the reciprocating plunger type having a perforated false bottom in the receptacle to ensure a flow of liquid through the clothes, the false bottom 10 is rigidly supported on a ring 13 having four radial arms 11 provided with sluice holes 12 which cause a flow of liquid throughout the whole receptacle so that the plungers need not be rotated. A sleeve 4 extending through the bottom of the receptacle 2 supports slidably a rod 8 carrying the plungers 6 on arms 7, this rod being reciprocated by an arm 9, the plungers being so situated that the effect of the downstroke is to force liquid down through one pair of quadrants and up through the other pair; the up-stroke has an opposite effect so that an alternating flow is kept up.
