Abstract

198,127. Ferguson, T., and Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co., Ltd. March 18, 1922. Regenerative systems.-In systems for regenerative braking of one or more traction motors wherein the field windings 2 of the motors 1 are excited by a separate generator 8, the field winding 10 of the exciter generator 8 is supplied from an auxiliary exciter 20 having its field 12 automatically regulated in accordance with the speed of the driven vehicle. This may be effected, as shown, by centrifugal action of an axle upon a rheostat 15, the resistance decreasing as the speed increases in order to increase the braking efiect. The rheostat is preferably of the type described in Specification 26646/13, [Class 38 (v), Electric switches &c.], in which a rotating contact disc engages with a movable brush. The braking effect may be independently varied at will by resistances 13 controlled by contactors 14. For trains with several motor vehicles, the regenerative effects are equalized by arranging the circuits so as to regulate the excitation equally and simultaneously on all the vehicles. Extra resistances may be cut-in and cut-out to compensate for the difference between series and parallel working of the main motors.
