Cylindrical bearings; thrust bearings; liquid, excluding.-Journal, thrust and footstep bearings have a chain or group of bearing pads 2 supported at their rear and front edges upon hemispherical, semicylindrical, or like swivelling supports 3. carried in recesses 4 in a casing 5 for journal bearings, Figs. 1 and 4, or in a ring 5, supported on a ring 6 which has a spherical bearing portion 9<a> seated in the bottom of footstep bearings, Figs. 5 and 6. By this arrangement equality of loading upon the pads and film lubrication is promoted. Lubricant is supplied by gravity means, pumps, or by centrifugal action. As shown in Fig. 4, lubricant is carried by loose rings 11 from passages 8 to a. chamber 7 surrounding the pads 2. In the construction shown in Fig. 5 lubricant, supplied to a passage 11, percolates through central holes 13 in the swivelling supports 3 to the bearing surface. Means are provided for preventing lubricant escaping from the bearings.
