Abstract

196,673. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (General Electric Co.). Jan. 24, 1922. Fluid-pressure. - A safety device applied to electrically - propelled vehicles provided with a combined straight and automatic pressure brake system comprises a pilot valve opened on release of a handle by the driver to connect the emergency brake pipe to the straight air pipe and to a circuit-breaker whereby the brakes are applied and the motors cut out. The pilot valve may be operated by the handle of the driver's brake valve in certain positions theof. The known equipment shown comprises a pipe 2 connected to the main reservoir 7, the straight air pipe 3 normally connected through the emergency valve 5 to the brake cylinder 6, and the emergency pipe 4 venting of which moves the valve 5 to connect the brake cylinder with the reservoir 8 which is connected to the reservoir 7 past the check valve 10. The handle of the driver's brake valve 1 can be removed when changing ends only after a straight air application of the brakes has been made and a double-check valve 30 is provided in the straight air pipe for cutting off the control of the brakes from the non-operating end. The handle 11 of the driver's valve 1, Fig. 3, is pivoted at 15 and has secured to it a finger 16 which in the lap and release positions of the valve is adapted under the action of a spring 18, if the handle is released, to open a pilot valve 17 and thus to connect, by pipe 21, the emergency pipe 4 to the straight air pipe 3 and to a circuit-breaker 27 for the motors. An emergency application of the brakes is thus effected if in these circumstances the pressure in the straight air pipe is below a predetermined value. The driver can remove his hand from the handle 11 without operation of the safety device by first closing a valve 22 in the pipe 21, by a pedal 25. A check valve 28 prevents air flowing from the pipe 3 to the circuit-breaker 27 when a straight air application of the brakes is made.
