Forging nails and rivets; dies; shearing- adjuncts.-A machine for making nails, tacks, rivets, &c. from a number of continuous rods or wires m has a rotary carrier d for multiple-cavity split-dies f in which severed pieces of stock m<1> are forged in two stages and then ejected by pushing one half f<5> of each die radially in turn. The carrier is intermittently rotated by Geneva stop-mechanism, and while at rest receives the ends of the wires &c. m in the cavities f<1> of one die and these are severed by a cutter o. In the next position the piece m<1> is pressed in and partly headed by a die operated through a lever v by a roller u on the cutter slide and in the next is finished by a die k, with recesses corresponding to the heads required, the impact 'being taken) by a bolster b engaging the lowest die and adjustable by wedges and screws. During the remainder of the cycle the half die f<5> is pushed out by a fixed cam e<1> to eject the tack t into a shoot and is then withdrawn by a fixed cam i. The press mechanism employed may be similar to that described in Specification 180,709 or 196,331 or both.
