Abstract

194,312. Jonkhoff, H. W. March 4, 1922, [Convention date]. Deflectable axle-ends and the like and intermediate connections therefor. - In compound vehicles of the kind in which a load platform is supported upon a four-wheeled trailer truck and upon the rear of the tractor, or upon two trailer trucks, the pivot point in the truck couplings is controlled in position laterally by means of mechanism which depends upon difference in direction between the longitudinal axes of the load platform and of one or both of the vehicles. A tractor and four-wheeled trailer truck both support a loading platform 3. The pivot point 8 in the coupling, by means of which the trailer wheels are steered, is adjusted laterally from a position on the axis of the tractor, when the tractor and load platform make an angle with one another. The coupling arm carrying the pivot 8 is pivoted to the tractor at the point 2 and is adjusted relatively to the tractor axis by flexible connections which pass over pulleys 5 and are led to a point 4 on the load platform. In a modification, applied to a vehicle on which a load platform is carried by two four-wheeled trucks, the pivot point in the coupling connecting the steering systems of the two trucks is adjusted laterally by flexible connections depending upon relative movement between the platform and both of the trucks.
