Abstract

193,883. Evans, T. F., and Sealy, A. B. Sept. 5, 1921. Variable-speed and reversing gearing comprises at least one rolling element such as a having teeth c engaging a ring of holes f in a disc or plate d supported at its back by a friction-clutch member k, the power passing across the frictionclutch surfaces i, j, Fig. 3. A single pinion a may be moved laterally between two discs d, e to drive them alternatively in opposite directions, cr separate pinions a, b may be used movable on their shaft g to drive two discs d, e at different speeds in either direction. The shaft g is supported in blocks r, s, Fig. 2, which are held down by a medially-pivoted spring t so that snugs u are held against cams x, Fig. 1. These cams have central notches for the neutral position, and lateral inclines against which the snugs u are thrust by the spring t, the effect being to wedge the pinions a, b against the discs d, e, and the latter against the clutch members k, l. When the speed is to be varied, the pinions a, b are made to approach or recede from one another by a double screwed rod 8. As applied to a motor-vehicle, the clutch members k, l drive the road wheels separately, and the wheel on the outer curve is allowed to overrun by disengaging its clutch. For this purpose, the block r or s corresponding is raised, so that the snug u rides up on the cam x, so that the wedging action no longer takes place. Rollers 6, Fig. 1, engaging the bases of the blocks r,. s are suitably operated by the steering-mechanism. Specifications 10144/04 and 18776/14 are referred to.
