Abstract

192,612. Bentum, L. O. Feb. 8, 1922. Direct air-pressure apparatus, automatic; valves for pressure fluid, actuation of; valves for pressure fluid, arrangement of.-Central apparatus for controlling the supply of compressed air to a number of oil wells or other liquid-raising chambers 10 comprises a number of air valves 13 - - 16, connected to a common air-supply pipe 17 and to the oil wells &c. by pipes 2 - - 5. Another air-valve 19 is connected to the pipe 17 and through a non-return valve 37 to a chamber 36, which contains liquid and communicates with a chamber 38 through flow and return pipes 39, 42, provided with cocks 40, 43 and non-return valves 41, 44. The air-valves are normally open and are closed in turn by the intermittent rotation of a number of discs 21 - - 25 adapted to be rotated one-eighth of a revolution when a weighted piston 45 in the cylinder 38 is raised by the liquid forced from the cylinder 36 by compressed air. The piston rod engages a lever 48 carrying a toothed quadrant 50 in mesh with a rack-bar 51. The bar 51 carries a pawl engaging a ratchet-wheel 27 on the spindle 26 of the discs 21 - - 24, so that, when the bar 51 is moved to the left during the rise of the piston 45, the discs are rotated one-eighth of a revolution thereby disengaging pawl arms 31 - - 35 from recesses in the discs 21 - - 25 and closing the air-valves. At the same time, a projection 57 on the bar 51 engages a lever 56 and opens a valve 54 to exhaust the cylinder 36 and allow the piston 45 to descend. During the descent of the piston the exhaust-valve 54 closes and a spring pawl 53 on the piston rod turns the dises through another eighth of a revolution to allow the air-valve of another chamber 10 to open. While the air-valve of a chamber is closed, the chamber fills in the liquid through a valve 12. The liquid is delivered through a pipe 9. By adjusting the opening of the cock 40, the duration of the air supply to each chamber 10 may be varied, and by adjusting the cock 43 the intervals between the air supplies, to the various chambers may be varied.
