Abstract

Hydrogen.-Apparatus for the production of hydrogen or a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide comprises a combustion chamber a provided with an upwardly-extending fuelsupply chamber b, with a reactive chamber c containing iron ore c<1> and a steam superheater g above it surrounding the chamber b. In operation, air or air and steam is blown in by the pipe o through the incandescent fuel in the chamber a, the resulting gases flow by the passages f, e, d, and through the chamber c and reduce the iron oxide therein, then pass up through the chamber g and escape by the outlet i. When the iron ore is sufficiently reduced and heated, the air or air and steam supply is shut off, the outlet i is closed, and steam is admitted by the pipe m through the chamber g to the chamber c. The resulting mixture of hydrogen and excess steam may be led off by the pipe n or may be passed through the fuel in the chamber a, giving a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide which is led off by the pipe s. The composition of the gas may be varied by injecting steam or liquid hydrocarbons or both through nozzles u. A branch p on the pipe o serves to admit air to burn the carbon monoxide in the gases which enter the chamber g. The several pipes are fitted with controlling- valves t.
