Abstract
13,042. Workman, H. Sept. 11. Three-colour and like systems ; prism systems.-A prism system for splitting a light beam into three parts, or for effecting the addition of parts into one beam, comprises prisms 1 . . 4 which are cemented together, the faces 5, 6 of prism 1, 7 of prism 2, and 8 of prism 4, being partly transmitting and partly reflecting. The surfaces 5 . . 8 may be coated all over with a semi-transparent metal layer, or may have a wholly reflecting layer arranged in small areas or narrow lines, the lines on the surfaces 5, 7 being preferably at right-angles to those on the surfaces 6, 8. A plate of plane parallel glass may be interposed between the prisms 1, 2 and the prisms 3, 4, and a reflecting-layer may be placed upon it instead of upon the prisms 1, 2. The reflecting-surfaces may be at 45 degrees or at other angles to the axis of the incident beam, and the prisms 2, 4 may be extended in the direction of the emergent beams to prevent internal reflections. The system may be used in a camera for colour photography or kinematography behind a single lens, in front of three lenses, or between lens combinations, or may have some or all of its faces worked to a spherical curvature. The images may be produced in one plane by the addition of reflecting-prisms integrally formed with, or cemented to, the prisms 2, 4, and the images may be made of equal size by the introduction of blocks of glass &c., as described in Specification 16,811/15. The system may be used in optical observing-apparatus, telescopes, microscopes, and camera obscuras being mentioned in the Provisional Specification.
