Case-hardening; modifying chemical characters of metals.-Iron and steel articles are casehardened, or their quality varied by surface treatment, by locally heating the articles and spraying suitable material on the heated region. Carbon may be used alone or in the form of an alloy, and it may be carried in the flame used for the local heating or in a current of compressed air or gas, or may be liberated from a gas mixture by chemical action; or material other than carbon, such as suitable metals or alloys, boron, silicon, or their compounds, may be used. In the apparatus shown, carbon from a vessel b is blown by an injector c through the flame of a blow-pipe e on to the heated surface of an article a to be case-hardened.
