Abstract

4350. Constantinesco, G., and Haddon, W. March 19. Percussive drills. - Percussive rock drills &c. are operated at a distance from a power generator by means of a series of periodic variations of pressure and volume travelling along a single liquid column, that is by impulses of energy conveyed along a single pipe 1. Fig. 2, to the tool 13 from a generator, by a series of waves due to the elasticity of the liquid column. The liquid column is divided by a spring " condenser " c, Fig. 1, as described in Specifications 9029/13 and 12,438/14, [both in Class 69 (ii), Hydraulic presses &c.], but liquid is allowed to escape therethrough for the purpose of washing out the bore-hole. This leak may be effected by making the reciprocating member c fit loosely in the pipe, or by making it hollow and with closed ends c, which slide in sleeves b, and providing ports f, g, h through which liquid passes when the member c is at the end of its stroke. The impulses are delivered to a piston-rod 3, Fig. 2, which carries the tool 13; the inner end of the rod fits loosely in the casing, so that the washing-water can pass by a passage 16 to a central bore 14. Springs 21, 22 constitute a condenser. A rifled extension 4 of the rod 3 works in a ratchet device 5, 6, whereby rotation of the tool is effected.
