Sprinklers, automatic.-Relates to alarm apparatus for sprinkler systems, of the type adapted to be operated by a continuous flow of water, but adapted to prevent false alarms due to water hammer or brief pulsations in the water supply. A chamber 4 is adapted to communoiate with an automatic alarm valve in the sprinkler supply pipe through a valve 21 and an inlet 8, and is provided with outlets 10, 11 leading to electric and mechanical alarms. The stem 22 of the valve 21 is secured to a diaphragm 35 and is acted upon by an adjustable spring 45. When the alarm valve opens, the water passes through an axial passage 55 in the valve 21 and its stem into the diaphragm chamber 25, and also through radial branch pipes 57 into the lower portion of the chamber 4. Some of the water escapes through horizontal passages 62 into a recess 60, and thence into a discharge passage 61, whereby a retarding action is obtained. When the diaphragm chamber 25 has been entirely filled and the pressure in the chamber 4 has reached a predetermined degree, and if the pressure in the inlet 8 is maintained, the diaphragm 35 is forced outwards, and the valve 21 opens, thus giving free acceess of the water to the chamber 4 and the alarm outlets 10, 11. At the same time, the oonical rear surface 64 of the valve 21 closes the passages 62, thus preventing escape of water through the discharge passage 61.
