Abstract

2451. Barnfather, R. Feb. 16. Overlap joints with longitudinal pressure and with yielding outer pipe.-Relates to couplings of the kind in which a rubber or like flexible pipe e is connected to a metal nozzle a by means of a coned sleeve c having a screw-threaded portion h engaged by a flanged locking-ring d, which abuts against a shoulder b on the nozzle. According to the invention, the sleeve c is coned more steeply than the cylindrical or conical nozzle a, so that as the coupling is made, the rubber pipe e is pinched at the outer extremity of the sleeve c and displaced towards the shoulder b, the displaced rubber thus tending to force the sleeve c away from the shoulder and so preventing unslackening of the locking-ring. In the coupled position, the end of the nozzle a projects beyond the outer end of the sleeve c. The nozzle is preferably serrated or barbed in known manner to aid the pinching action of the coned sleeve.
