Cutting-appliances.-A hand-directed electrically-driven cloth-cutting machine is provided with a guard-blade 7 arranged in the plane of, and in front of, but not covering, the exposed edge of the knife 3, and the sharpening-attachment 28, 29 is located behind the guard and beneath the motor, whereby a large portion of the forward edge of the knife, extending above the plane of its centre, is exposed to the view of the operator. The grinding-disks 28, 29 are on opposite sides of the knife and normally are held out of contact with it; they are carried upon pivoted arms 22, 23 coupled together by a link 33 and a lever 31. The lever is provided with a handle whereby the disks may be moved into contact with the knife simultaneously, in opposition to the pressure of the spring 30. The electric motor 5 has a cylindrical fieldmagnet frame constituting the motor casing, and the field poles are located at the sides of the machine to permit of the housing of a pushbutton switch therein. In order to avoid the reduction of flux path of magnetic material, the face-plate 14 of the switch is formed by a plug of magnetic material which fits into the opening in the casing. The depression of the push-button 15 brings the contact member 16 into contact with the stationary contacts 17, thereby completing the circuit, and the button is held in the depressed position by a sliding spring latch-plate 18 having a key-hole slot to fit over the stem of the button.
