Abstract
20,443. Dronsfield, J. Oct. 2. Milling - machines. - The ends of flat-bars, for carding-engines, which engage with the bends or other guiding-parts, are milled in a continuous-action milling-machine with a rotary work-carrier. The required shape is derived from a former. A hollow shaft 10, Figs. 3 and 11, carries two spiders 11 having interchangeable sealing-blocks 12 to accommodate flat-bars of various types. The clamping - plates 14, Fig. 8, are varied by springs when the nut is slackened to facilitate the removal of a finished and the insertion of a new bar. This change takes place during the milling of a bar on another of the arms. Worm-wheel sections 33 engage a worm itself driven by worm-gearing from the main shaft 22, to impart feed during milling. The spider is turned bv hand from one position to the next. A shaft 16 carries a fixed lever 35 and a loose lever 36 angularly adjustable with respect to the lever 35 by a worm and sector 40 and bolt and slot 37. Interchangeable formers F engage adjustable abutments 44 on the driving-spider and so work the shaft 16, which carries the cutter bracket 17, according to the profile required. Weighted arms 47 on the shaft 16 and a spring 38 maintain contact between the formers and abutments. An adjustable bolt 39 passing through a nut 36<x> limits the motion. To enable the cutters 19 to be set separately, the shaft 16 is made in two parts connected by an angularly adjustable coupling. For gauging the amount of adjustment of the cut, the worm 40 may be replaced by a worm 40<x>, Fig. 6, having an angularly adjustable graduated barrel 42 cooperating with an index mark on a plate 44. After setting the zero, the barrel is locked by a screw and plug 43<x>. The spindles carrying the cutters 19 are geared at 26, Fig. 8, to a cross-shaft 20 driven through a compound wheel 24, loose on the shaft 16, from the main shaft. Fig. 2 shows a modified arrangement of drive.
