Abstract
18,648. Hahn, H. C. Aug. 13. Window appliances. - Comprises an improved construction of portable fire - escape capable of being clamped to a window - sill, the apparatus being of the type in which automatically operable means are employed whereby persons of different weights may be gradually lowered to the ground and the cable automatically rewound after the descent has been accomplished. Fig. 3 shows a vertical section. The drum 13 is mounted in a casing 10 on a shaft carrying a worm-wheel which is connected to the shaft by a one-way ratchet clutch. The worm-wheel gears with a vertical shaft 21 carrying at the upper end a centrifugal governor which acts on a braking-disk whenever the speed is excessive. A coiled spring 29 has one end fixed to the casing and the other end fixed to a shaft 27 connected by gearing 15, 30 to the drum shaft. When a person descends, the drum drives the worm - wheel through the ratchet clutch, and the governor and brake suitably regulate the speed of dcscent. At the same time the spring is wound up. When the cable is released, the spring rotates the drum so as to take up the cable. the ratchet dutch allowing the governor to remain inactive.
