Abstract

16,474. Schilling, C. July 10. Alcoholic liquids, distilling.-In rectifying spirit in periodically-working apparatus, the whole of the foreshots and faints obtained in one operation are distilled with the crude spirit in the next operation, so that in each operation the end products, namely ethers and fusel oil, are obtained. No faints of the second grade are obtained, the fractions collected being ethers. foreshots of the third and second grade, rectified spirit, faints of the third grade, and fusel oil. (1) In treating crude spirit having a low content of aldehydes, the crude spirit is first put into the still and diluted. The charge is heated, and, after the formation of vapours, the trays of the column are filled with foreshots of the second grade. The foreshots of the third grade are then admitted to the top of the column. The admission of water to the condenser is thus reduced, so that vapours flow to the cooler, ethers being thus obtained. The remainder of the foreshots of the second grade is then run into the middle of the column, and ethers, foreshots of the third and second grade, and refined spirit are successively collected. A few hours before the end of the distillation the faints are run into the still or the bottom of the column, and the remainder of the refined spirit and the faints are successively obtained. The fusel oil may be afterwards distilled over. (2) In the case of crude spirit containing a large amount of aldehydes, the process is modified bv charging the still with water which is heated till it boils, running preheated crude spirit rapidly into the top of the column, then running foreshots of third grade into the top of the column, and the whole of the foreshots of the second grade into the middle of the column. The crude spirit may, before distillation, be treated with potassium permanganate to destroy malodorous impurities, and with alkali to neutralize acid and to decompose the ethers.
