Abstract

7356. Minue, W. E. March 23. Radial-cylinder engines; ; revolving-cylinder and reciprocating-piston type; engines with two or more parallel cylinders with axes perpendicular to main shaft. - In a radial revolving- cylinder engine, the cylinders are cast in pairs with the steam-jackets around them, and are secured between disks 9, 10. The power shaft 11 is bolted to the disk 9, and the crank-shaft 1, which is secured in position by a key 3, comprises two crank members 4, 5 secured together by a coupling 6, which is slit and clamped thereon by bolts 7. The shaft 11 and the disks 9, 10 are mounted in roller bearings. The disk bearings have races 21 secured in position by plates 22, Fig. 3, and the crankshaft has races 26 secured by nuts 27. The rollers are mounted on pins 24 secured to one another by circular plates 25. The crank-shaft is provided with openings communicating with a lubricating-bore. Steam is supplied to passages 69 communicating with the valves through an angularly adjustable packing-device 57, Figs. 1 and 2, carrying an eccentric 72 actuating the exhaust valves. The part 57 has two bearing- surfaces 61, 62 provided with lubricating-slots which are engaged by renewable slippers 63, 64 carried by the plate 10. The oscillating exhaust valves 73, each of which controls a pair of cylinders, are constructed with both ends closed, are divided into two compartments by a wall 74, have slots 75 which periodically put the cylinders into communication with the interior of the casing, have ball bearings at their ends, and are connected by cranks 80 and links 81 to a strap 82 mounted by ball bearings on the eccentric 72. The motion of the strap 82 is constrained by pivoted links 85, The oscillating steam valves, each of which controls a pair of cylinders, are constructed with one end open and register with the steam passages 69. The valves at their other end are connected by cranks and links 93 to an eccentric strap mounted on a ball bearing. The eccentric 94 has outwardly-extending lugs 95, 96 and an upwardly-extending lug 97 which engages a guide-piece 98 secured to the casing. The lugs 95, 96 are provided with cam-shaped slots engaging guide-rollers. The adjustment is effected by links 107, 105 connected to a hand-controlled spindle 104.
