Abstract
5531. Hardy, J. J., Hardy, L. R., and Hardy Bros. March 4. Reels and winches, rod.-In fishing-reels which may be rendered free running, for casting directly from the reel, automatic means are provided for preventing the spool from attaining excessive speed. Fingers or shoes d, Fig. 1, mounted on arms c attached to the reel spindle a, may, by centrifugal force, engage with, and act as a brake on, a friction surface @ carried by the back plate of the reel. Such fingers may be used to increase the effect of springs normally held against the surface e, Feather springs may be used on the arms c to hold the brake members out of contact under normal conditions. Centrifugal bodies d, Fig. 5, controlled by coil springs f<2>, may carry leaf springs d<1> adapted to bear on an inclined friction surface e formed or mounted on the back-plate. The centrifugal bodies may be attached to the free ends of spiral springs carried by the spindle a. A flange k<1>, Fig. 7, may be pressed against the back-plate e by means of mechanism comprising a spring f<3>, and a collar h engaged by the short arms of bell-crank levers g, the long arms of which carry the centrifugal bodies d. According to the Provisional Specification, the fingers may be mounted on the outer cheek plate of the line spool.
