Abstract

3917. Variable Speed Gear, Ltd., and Robson, J. Feb. 14. Telemotor apparatus.-Relates to power transmission gear for the steering - apparatus of submarine and other boats, for the elevating and training of ordnance, and for winding and hoisting. Automatic means are provided whereby the handwheel controlling the hydraulic transmission gear or the electric motor may be declutched in case of failure of the power gear, and clutched directly to the member to be operated. Fig. 1 shows the apparatus applied to steering-mechanism, in which an electric motor C<1> operates a variable-delivery and reversible pump C which supplies liquid to the motor B, this motor operating the rudder post A through gearing b, b<1>, b<2>. The spur-wheel b<1> is clutched to the shaft B' bv the sliding clutch member E, and at the same time the clutch member E<1> engages with the spur-wheel C, which operates the pump control device C' through the medium of the pinion C' and screwed shaft c<2>. The rotation of the pinion c<3> by the power device brings the regulator C<2> back to its zero position in known manner. If the circuit through the motor C<1> fails, the solenoid E<2>, which is in series with the motor, releases the clutch members E', E and connects the latter directly with the clutch d' on the hand-wheel shaft d, so that the rudder post A may be operated by hand. In an alternative form, the motor B may be driven by a supply of pressure fluid from an hydraulic or pneumatic main, the clutches E, E' being operated by a suitable pressure-controlled device. In another form, the rudder may be operated directly by an electric motor, a starting- rheostat taking the place of the pump control. In the form shown in Fig. 2, the rudder post is operated directly from the pistons of the presses B. The remaining details are substantially the same as those shown in Fig. 1. The governor E<3> Fig. 1, may be provided as an additional feature, so that the clutch members are operated on a decrease in speed of the motor C'. This governor is employed alone when the prime-mover is other than an electric motor.
