Abstract

Calcium cyanamide is obtained by heating calcium carbide a n d nitrogen separately or simultaneously to a temperature much above the reaction temperature so that the reaction takes place instantaneously. The finely-powdered carbide is sifted through a sieve 5 into nitrogen in a tube 1 which is highly heated by electric current through ring contact 2, 3. The nitrogen is supplied by a pipe 9 and passes through charcoal between an outer shell 8 and the tube 1, and thence through a channel 10 into the tube 1. The lower part 6 of the furnace is water-cooled so that the cyanamide is rapidly cooled and is discharged as a powder by a screw 7. The furnace may be heated by arcs, which may be spread into disks.
