Wood, treating with liquids. - Wood is bleached and the sap is removed by treating it with a solution of a substance such as hydrogen peroxide, capable of yielding a bleaching gas, and during the treatment introducing periodically a reagent such as potassium permanganate, which is capable of decomposing the bleaching-solution and may itself have bleaching properties. The bleaching-solution may be alkaline, and may contain a viscous substance, such as an alkaline silicate, to retard the liberation of bleaching-gas, and the penetration of the solution into the wood.
