Drying; calendering and pressing.-By the use of very smooth drying- drums A and pressing- rolls F acting behind the drying-felts D or directly on the paper web, calendering-rolls may be dispensed with. The upper and lower tiers of rolls are arranged as close together as possible, doctors m lead the paper from one roll to the next in the case of breaks, and guide-rolls d' are placed nearer the drying-cylinders on the side receiving the web of paper. The rolls F have a metal core and a covering of compressible material such as rubber. They are mounted in bars g having lateral projections h, against which rotatable cams i press for the adjnstment of pressure on the paper.
