Abstract

2468. Beckwith, H. Jan. 30. Hulling, husking, and decorticating.-A machine for removing the pericarp from palm fruit, olives, &c. consists of a series of knives C arrange in an horizontal plane, across which the fruit is moved by an endless conveyer. A pair of endless chains, carrying cross-rods h4 on which are mounted pocketed members H, pass over sprocket-wheels b, b1. The members H have two lugs at the rear encircling one rod h4, and a jaw h5 at the front engaging the adjacent rod h4. These rods carry also bosses which move between guides D and rest at the top upon a track M. An endless band of fabric or sheet metal carrying shaped slats of wood or metal may alternatively be employed. The feeding-device consists of a hopper E from the bottom of which the fruit is expelled by a reciprocating plunger e3, the position and length of its stroke being varied by adjusting the length of both the crank and the connecting-rod by which it is driven. Alternatively, a screw feed may be employed. The bearings of the sprocket-wheels b, b1 are adjustable, and a spring may be interposed between the adjusting-screw and the bearing to give a tension to the conveyer. The knives may be moved vertically and may be turned individually to adjust the space between them, through which the pericarp passes into a hopper f1 leading to a conveyer F, which may be jacketed.
