Abstract

580. Wolff, B. Jan. 8. Working-fluid supply.-Turbines or other engines are driven by a liquid which is actuated partly by periodic gas explosions and partly by the vapour of a constant volume of liquid having a low boiling-point, the latter liquid being alternately vaporized by the heat of the explosions and condensed. The turbine f is driven by mercury, which subsequently falls into the casing extension s and thence by way of the valve t into a chamber n. From here, the mercury is forced past a valve o into a container a by the explosion of a mixture of hot air and gas supplied through a valve m. The air is supplied from a reservoir v connected with a compressor k actuated by the turbine, and the gas is supplied by a pipe l<1>. The chamber n is provided with an exhaust valve z. The heat of the explosion partly vaporizes the layer of liquid carbon dioxide c which floats on a quantity of mercury b in the container a, and the pressure of the vapour together with the pressure due to the explosion forces the mercury through a pipe e to the turbine f, a valve d controlling the pipe e. The container a is periodically cooled so as to condense the vaporized carbon dioxide by the expansion in the jacket p of air supplied from the reservoir v by a pipe x controlled by a valve y. The valves y, d, m, z, t are operated through suitable gearing, as shown, from the turbine shaft u.
