Rotary machines; inking-apparatus. - Newspaper printing-machines having double-width cylinders on which the pairs of printing-plates are ' staggered ' are so arranged that the supply of ink to the forme cylinders is graduated, and free access is given to more than half the surface of the cylinders to permit of removal of the plates in two stages. In the machine shown, the plate cylinder A is inked by the rollers B', B<2>, B<3>, its direction of rotation as indicated by the arrow bringing the plates into contact with the rollers in the order named, so as to graduate the supply of ink. Ink is transferred from B<1> to B<2> by a rider b, and from B<2> to B<3> by a rider b<1>, the first roller B' being supplied from the duct H by rollers H<1>, H<2>, H<3>, &c. in usual manner. The inking-rollers and riders may be journaled in segments J, pivoted at J<1> and having gear teeth J<2> engaging pinions on a shaft J<4>, provided with a crank-handle J<5> by which it may be rotated to move the rollers away from the cylinder A. When so removed, the rollers may be lifted on to a carriage L running on transverse rails L<1>. The segments J may be balanced by a weight K on an arm K<1> connected by a rod K<2> to a crank K<3>. Thus, more than half the surface of the cylinder A, between the impression cylinder and the roller B<1>, is exposed for removal of the plates &c.
