Strainers.-In connexion with a water-strainer having a screw blade to assist in the removal of the separated solids, a by-pass is provided to connect the water inlet a with the chamber d surrounding the strainer s, from which the filtered water is normally discharged through the outlet e. A reverse flow of liquid for cleansing purposes can thus be caused through the strainer, the impurities being washed away through the valve n, which is arranged for the discharge of the separated solid matter. When the apparatus is intended for use on the suction side of a pump, a receptacle v is provided, having a lower valve w and a flushing-pipe x, and this receptacle is emptied when the valve n is closed.
