Abstract

19,409. Knowles, J. T., [Sherwin-Williams Co.]. Aug. 27. Film evaporators.- Drying - apparatus for pulp, comprising an annular drying - table and a rotary frame carrying a spreading- device and a collecting- device in front of the spreading-device, is provided with vapour-collecting hoods carried by the frame and covering the material on the drying-surface. The table A, as shown in Fig. 2, is formed of radial sections supported by webs 3 on a foundation 1 and connected to steam supply and exhaust pipes 6, 7; the steam supply to each section is independently regulable. The frame is supported by a central spider 10 rotatably mounted on a column 11 having a flanged top and a centring-sleeve 12, ball and roller bearings being provided which may be renewed on lifting the frame Arms 16 extend radiallv from the spider 10 and are supported at their outer ends by rollers 20 running on a circular track. The frame is rotated by an electric motor 27 which rotates a pinion 23 meshing with a rack formed on this track. The feeding-apparatus B, Fig. 1, and discharging-apparatus C are supported close together, the discharging - apparatus being attached to and directly under one of the arms 16, while the feeding - apparatus is supported from the struts 17, 18 connecting this arm with the next after. A platform 31 and crossing 32 are provided so that both apparatus can be easily reached by the operator. The material is conducted from a central column 33, Fig. 2, through which a pipe 38 supplies the material through a pipe 39 to the device B. From the pipe 39, the material is fed to a tank 42, Fig. 10, having a series of outlets provided with valves 46 operated by levers 48 near the platform ; the tank contains a hand-operated stirrer 51. From the outlets, the material falls into a trough 58, near the outer side of which a vertical plate 59 is secured. The inclined feeding-plate 43 of the trough is formed with teeth 58 whereby the material is delivered in drops on the table. The ends of the trough are closed by plates 60 and intermediate parallel plates 62 are provided, these plates being hinged to brackets 61 on the frame and being rocked by cams 63 driven by a motor 65, Fig. 1. A pump 54, Fig. 24, supplies the material from a tank under a constant head determined by the elevation of an overflow pipe 56. The collecting-device comprises a brush 70, Fig. 16, and a pair of scrapers 71 pivotally adjustable on the axes of conveyers 77. These are contained within a casing 72 kept in close contact with the table by flexible strips 74 at the sides and fitting closely at the outer and inner edges of the table, the contact at the inner edges being that of a lip 73, Fig. 17, provided on a hopper 91 extending from the casing. The brush bearings are adjustable, and the brush and the conveyers are drawn from a shaft turned by a motor 90, Fig. 1. This motor also drives a screw conveyer 93, Fig. 17, in a trough 92 which receives material from the hopper 91 and delivers it to a central hopper 94, whence it is removed by a conveyer 95. The inner end of the trough moves air-tightly in an annular opening formed by flanges 97 on the central hopper. A fan 103, Fig. 3, connected by pipes 108, 109 with the casing 72, maintains a slight draught, preventing escape of dust, which is delivered by the fan to a series of filter bags 106, the contents of which are delivered at intervals into the trough 92. Hoods, formed of side members 110, Figs. 1 and 2, and central members 111 supported from the arms 16, deliver the vapours evolved through arms 114 to a collecting-drum formed of a rotatable section 41 and a fixed section 34, from the latter of which the vapour is drawn off through a pipe 116 by a fan or stack. The sections of the pipes 114 decrease towards the drier parts of the apparatus. The hood 113 next the feeding- apparatus is constructed with an extended portion, Fig. 10, under the feeding-plate 43, so that vapour is largely removed as soon as formed. The pipes 114, Fig. 2, extend downwards towards the vapour hood, in which drain-pipes 118, 120 lead to a pocket 121, whence drainage is discharged. Current is supplied to the motors 27, 65, 90, driving the frame, feeding-apparatus, and collecting-apparatus respectively from tracks 122, Fig. 3, supported on brackets on the column 11, on which tracks run contact-pieces supported by and insulated from an arm 16. The switches and rheostats controlling the circuits are mounted near the operator's platform.
