Abstract

19,349. Laborda, R., and Cuellas, P. Aug. 26. Spring and weight actuated lowering - apparatus. - Relates to a foot - operated climbing- apparatus, with provision for self-lowering, for use in buildings, mine shafts, or for reaching high shelves in a building. The apparatus consists of a vertical frame 1 and a frame 25 sliding on the vertical frame and provided with sliding stirrups 27, 26 which are connected together by a cable 28 passing round pulleys 29 on the underside of the frame 25, and are attached to cables 31, 32 wound on spring drums rotating on an axle 2 carried by the top of the frame 1. The springs in the drums are oppositely coiled, and the cables 31, 32 are wound on the drums so that descent of the frame 25 winds up the springs. The drums normally tend to raise the frame 25 and the stirrups but are prevented by a jamming-lever 35, mounted on the frame 25 and engaging the frame 1. The drums are prevented from rotating, to unwind the cables when a person is on the stirrups, by ratchet-wheels on the drums and pawls 7, 8, which are thrown out of operation by rods 11, 12, cords 13, 14, and a pull-cord 15. To prevent a person from descending too quickly, the drums are provided with disks 16 for band brakes 18 which are mounted at one end on pins 17 secured to the drums and are formed with hooks 20 at the other end. The hooked ends are operated to bring the brakes into action, when the speed of the drums exceeds a certain limit, by the hooked ends of pivoted weighted arms 22, which are normally held against stops 22<1> by springs 23. In ascending, a person places the feet in the stirrups, throws the jamming-lever 35 out of engagement, and uses the stirrups alternately. To support the weight, the free stirrup and sliding frame are raised until the frame engages the fixed stirrup, which is prevented from descending by the corresponding pawl and ratchetwheel. To descend, the person pulls the cord 15 to throw the pawls out of operation, and allow the drums to rotate to unwind the cables, the descent being regulated by the centrifugallygoverned brake.
