Piston valves; shocks, preventing. - The operating-mechanism of a dental chair comprises three telescoping sections 40, 41, 42, the section 41 having a tubular valve 45 with ports 46 extending into the space below the lowermost piston so that when the piston reaches its bottom position the valve is engaged by a shoulder 47 and fluid is allowed to pass out from beneath the piston carried by the section 40 which is then permitted to fall. The valve 45 has a hollow cap 48 with a spring 49 by which the shock produced when the lower end of the valve strikes the shoulder 47 is cushioned against the column of fluid.
