Abstract

Generating by direct contact of combustion products. - In an apparatus for generating a mixture of steam and combustion products, means are provided for continuously exhausting the burnt gases from the combustion chamber into a surrounding steam - generating and storage chamber. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, fuel and air from pipes E, F respectively are burnt in a chamber A, and the gases are continuously exhausted into the surrounding chamber B, containing water or other liquid, through a rotary device, comprising radial tubes e arranged after the fashion of a Barker's mill, and driven from an external source of power by the pulley S. The chamber B is covered with asbestos C, and is provided with a hand hole Y, liquid injector X, mud-valve c, and outlet pipe D. A pipe m may be provided for supplying a stream of liquid for cooling the bearings of the exhauster. Gaseous or liquid fuel, or a solid fuel such as gunpowder, may be used. In place of the exhauster shown, a rotary pump preferably situated below the level of the liquid in the storage chamber may be used.
