Abstract

Variable-speed toothed gearing for motorvehicles comprises a driven shaft 5, Fig. 2, connected through a multiple-disk clutch 15 to a concentric driving-shaft, which is in the form of two sleeves 7, 11 on the shaft 5 adapted to be connected by a sliding clutch member 12. The sleeve 7 carries two fixed gears 9, 10 meshing with gears 31, 32, which are loose on a countershaft 30 and adapted to be connected thereto alternatively by a sliding double clutch member 34. A gear 35 fast to the shaft 30 meshes with a gear 37 secured to the sleeve 11. The sleeve 7 drives the sleeve 11 through the clutch member 12 for a high speed, or through the shaft 30 for two reduced speeds, and the power passes at all speeds from the sleeve 11 to the shaft 5 through the clutch 15. The clutch 15 is normally kept in engagement by springs 17 and is disengaged by means of a rod 21 and screwed cap 24. The engine is started by a pinion 54 ratchet - mounted on the shaft 30. The clutches 12, 34 are operated by forks 41, 42, Fig. 5, which are connected to sleeves 48, 49 slidable upon a turnable operating-spindle 38. Pegs 43, 44 project from the spindle 38 into cam-grooves 45, 46 in the sleeves 48, 49, the arrangement being such that as the spindle 38 is turned the proper movements are imparted to the clutches. The spindle 38 is turned through a resilient link.
